Sekiguchi Church was officially established as a parish in 1900. The archbishop’s residence was relocated in 1918, and in 1920, Tokyo’s cathedral was changed from Tsukiji Church to Sekiguchi Church, where it remains to this day. The cathedral was destroyed in the Great Tokyo Air Raid during World War II. After the war, with generous support from the Diocese of Cologne, Germany, Tokyo Cathedral of St. Mary, designed by Kenzo Tange, was consecrated on December 8, 1964.
Sekiguchi Church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, has a history spanning over 100 years. May its modern architectural design and church community become a symbol of harmony between the visible and the invisible, and may the Gospel of Jesus Christ reach the hearts of many.
