The Legal Aid Society of Birmingham, a non-profit service organization affiliated with the Birmingham Bar Association, provides free court-appointed legal representation for children and low income adults. Legal Aid exists to help those who cannot afford a lawyer. While our services are limited to those who are eligible for a free, court-appointed attorney, we are happy to direct you to other resources in the Jefferson County area if we are unable to help you.
Our staff of 20 lawyers represents only indigent persons, as determined by the courts where we work. At the Family Court of Jefferson County, both Birmingham and Bessemer Divisions, we represent children accused of delinquency offenses. We also serve as guardians ad litem for children who are the subject of abuse and neglect. All access to our services is through court appointment only. We also represent indigent adults in the municipal courts of Birmingham and Tarrant, and those defendants who participate in the Jefferson County Drug Court program. Access to Legal Aid attorneys in our adult division is through court appointment only.
